Ms. Mfon Ufot

|
Ms. Mfon Ufot is a
dedicated Community Activist in the Nigerian,
African and the American Communities. She is the
Volunteer co-host and co-producer of the weekly
Radio Program, African Experience Worldwide on
WRFG Radio, 89.3FM for the past 16 years. This
is a program of information, news and
discussions about Africa and Nigeria. Because of
her consistent dedication to the ideals of WRFG
Radio, Mfon was invited to serve on the
Operations Committee. The role of the Operations
Committee is to oversee the day to day operation
of the radio station and ensure that all FCC
rules are adhered to among other duties.
As the Parent Advisor and Coordinator of the
Nigerian Youth Alliance (NYA) since 1999, Mfon
works with the youth to ensure that the mission
and vision of the organization—to bridge the gap
between the Nigerian and American Cultures,
cultural pride and youth leadership development
are upheld. Members of the NYA have contributed
thousands of hours in community service to the
Atlanta community. In return many of them have
benefited from the educational scholarship
offered by the organization. The greatest
achievement of NYA is instilling cultural pride
in young Nigerian youth in the Atlanta
Metropolitan area. Mfon believes that the future
of Nigeria lies in the education of our youth.
Mfon is a founding
member and president of the Nigerian Women
Association of Georgia. She has served in many
capacities in the organization and has
contributed tremendously to the growth of that
esteemed organization. Mfon has introduced many
initiatives that have helped to bring needed
funds and resources to the organization. Those
initiatives include but are not limited to The
Beacon 100 Project, the Morningstar and the
Health Initiative.
As the Founding President of the Coalition of
Concerned Africans, Mfon led a team of dedicated
members and volunteers to assist the recently
arrived African Refugees to adjust to life in
the United States. During her term as the
president, a Saturday school and a tutorial
program was established for the young African
students, many of them could not speak English.
Through the dedication of the volunteers and the
Coalition members and because of Mfon’s
leadership, many of those students will be
graduating from college next year.!
Mfon has always
maintained pride in being a Nigerian and an
African even in the face of very negative press
about Nigeria. Mfon sometimes uses the weekly
Radio Program to educate listeners about Nigeria
and Africa. Many Nigerian leaders have been
featured in that program.
Mfon has always encouraged any of the
organizations she is involved in including the
Nigerian Youth Alliance and the Nigerian Women
Association of Georgia to get involved through
community service, not only in the Nigerian
community, but in the Atlanta Community. She
believes that the best way to counter the
negative information about Nigeria is for the
Nigerian themselves to be visible in the
community educating others, and contributing to
their community. |
